Importance of Pool Winter Service
Tech Note: Winter Service
For those of you that utilized “winter service” this year, thank you… and more importantly, your pool thanks you. There are many reasons why winter service are important. Let’s go over a few of them here:
1. Probably most importantly is water chemistry. When water gets colder, it becomes more corrosive to the surface of the pool. There is something called the Langelier Saturation Index or LSI for short. This is the standard pool test that pool professionals utilize tell if a pool is scale forming or corrosive. Even though your pool is setting idle during the winter does not mean that the water will not attack the surface of the pool, it does!
2. You know that itsy bitsy spider that climbed up the water spout? He also is able to get under your pool cover, along with dirt, debris, worms, rodents, etc. As these things settle in the pool over the winter, it is important to add chemicals to the water to prevent staining from this debris. We also add chemicals during winter service to prevent staining.
3. There’s not much we can do to prevent sticks and limbs from falling out of the trees. Fortunately, most of these will bounce right off of the winter cover, but sometimes, you get a sharp stick coming down from a good height and picking up speed that hits at just the right angle and BAM, hole in cover. Not to worry, these can be repaired, but the repairs aren’t as sightly as the original cover. Wouldn’t it be great if our cars, houses, driveways, etc always looked like the day we bought them? Well, all that we can do is maintain them to keep them as close to new as we can.
As we get closer to spring, we can’t wait to see all of our customers again! Many of you have become great friends and we want to thank you for your continued support of Bi-State. Cheers to a great 2020! See ya soon!
